Petrify (Wired Up series)

Just recieved a copy of Petrify from the publisher. I might be getting another commission from them for another in the series but for a slightly younger audience and with more illustrations! Petrify is written by Beth Chambers.

That’s so cool! I wanna read it, it looks so scary!! NUMBER 1 ILLUSTRATOR AKBAR ALI, THERE IS NO BETTER! NO ONE CAN COMPETE!

Dee Dee of Dum Dum Girls
Tired now, and it was an awful day at work today so I played around with that ink drawing in my sketchbook of Dee Dee. Thanks for that circle of roses idea Jen.

Was that my idea?

Ink Sketch - Lana Del Rey
I woke up this morning really wanting to draw something. I was still in a silly dreamy mood and spent around 45 minutes on this inky sketch of Lana Del Rey, (I must find the source of the wonderful photograph I used for reference), before I ran to work and got there in the nick of time. I’m enjoying how people are finding it so difficult to define her.

This is amazing. Holy Shit.

Library Display: Chinese New Year, Year of the Dragon

I’ve been doing displays at the library I work at ever since they realised I did illustration work. However, I’ve never really thought about, or had the time to record and photograph them, Its just too busy an environment. I managed to get some time to sneak off the counter and create a display to mark the Chinese New Year. After taking the advice of a fellow colleague, I took my camera along today to get a few quick snaps before it all disappears and transforms into something else. I’ve already had to heal the poor dragons forelimb after finding it torn off. No doubt, the workings of a jubilant 2 year old. It’s ephemeral art really and I’ve never felt too precious about them, but I always find them sooo enjoyable to create even if it means getting distracted by small library patrons asking for help finding Rainbow Magic and Horrid Henry Books.

It’s amazing! You’re a credit to the library!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs -

Wahey! Received my copy of Snow White from the publisher. So that’s the two Classic Tales commissions done. They’re really hard to find on the net. Well they’re not even up on the publisher site yet, and they’re actually for schools. Bleh.

Yaay! Bring it round later!

Life of Pi -
I’ve been rereading Life of Pi written by Yann Martel. I can remember how the vivid descriptions of Pi’s ordeals scared me to death when I read it for the first time. I’ve recently bought the illustrated edition, it’s a hefty book but the illustrations by Tomislav Torjanac are absolutely breathtaking. I was inspired, so I created this badly designed ‘book cover’ I suppose. I’m not much of a typographer either, but I love drawing animals.

wow you drew all that? that is well good!

I know I already reblogged this, but everyone should follow my friend Akbar Ali (aky-aky) because not only is he an amazing illustrator (and unique person) he LOVES books, he is passionate about them and that really shows in his book illustrations, at school he was honorary librarian and now in adult life he is an actual librarian at my local library and can often be found gawping at children’s books, grinning like a cheshire cat when he should be working!! Anyway, he won’t do any kind of promotion of his tumblr because he’s a reclusive artist obv. but that won’t stop me from telling everyone to follow him right now! I mean it!
