I dont understand why a company would want to blatantly shut out 51 percent of their potential buyers. Also, does anyone remember these? They taste terrible. Kinder all the way.

They aren’t shutting out anyone, actually they are making the product all the more appealing to men and women with its newly imbued manliness!!! :/

feministblackboard:

What do you think of this commercial?

I can see both sides on this one. On one hand, it is definitely gender stereotyping, but on the other… Obviously the mother is disappointed that she can’t dress up her daughter in outfits that are very pink and frilly (which, oh yeah, some people like doing to their daughters), but in the end she is tolerant and ultimately lets her daughter wear whatever she wants. She does not punish her daughter or force her daughter into clothes she is unwilling to put on. She also lets her daughter build a garage with her toys because, in the end, gender norms don’t matter. Your take?

Yeah I see the advert as being dismissive of the mother’s views, while the child seems content. The mother is quaint at best and ‘high mainenance, neurotic’ at worst. So it isn’t that problematic, of course there is a perspective that sees adverts as a chance to build tolerance rather than profit off tired stereotypes and harmful prescriptive roles… but I just say, down with all adverts, they will never be our friends.

Feminism’s failings?

hmm..

seems to me that when we bring up the supposed failings of feminism, they are eerily similar to the pitfalls of the patriarchy.

I mean, the criticism that feminism comes under from its own side (i.e. not the nonsense spat out by sexists) is usually centred around how individuals who call themselves feminists have either failed to be feminist enough or failed to adhere properly to other positive parallel movements. I have heard of people who call themselves feminist being transphobic, homophobic, racist… time and time again this nasty fault is linked to them also identifying as feminist.

I believe, as many of us do, that we live in a rather unfair world which encourages the alienation and oppression of certain groups of people; there is no reason to think that prejudices that lead to institutionalised oppression and alienation will not leak into positive movements. I take issue with many people’s point that this is an inherent failing of the movement. A movement for women’s rights is always going to be for women’s rights, nobody, not even Sarah Palin, can change that, no matter how much she might call herself a feminist. It can’t be more than that, and it will never be less than that. I call myself a feminist but it’s not the only thing I am. I’m an activist in many fields, I’m an ally to many causes. There are some people who are feminist but also free-market capitalists. I don’t think this changes what feminism is, I think it’s a cause, and you can be part of it or not.

I’m a big fan of anarchist ideals. I am also aware that almost all anarchist gatherings and groups are populated and dominated by men. These men could be utter bastards (let’s face it they probably are), this doesn’t change what anarchism means. Anarchist groups may have patriarchal leanings, may have sexist members but this isn’t because of some flaw in anarchist doctrines, this is because we still exist in a patriarchal world and anarchist groups unfortunately do not exist in a vacuum.

So maybe next time we talk about how someone who identifies as feminist fucks up, we shouldn’t say ‘that’s the problem with feminism’ or ‘some feminists are like that’ because it isn’t accurate or constructive to do so, oppressive behaviour is much much much more likely to be a product of the status quo than of a positive civil rights cause.

on the Hathor Legacy I was talking about how much I like Lindsay Weir from Freaks and Geeks and how I think she’s a great feminist character.

Lindsay Weir (freaks and geeks). This show could have easily starred a boy, but what a great character Lindsay was! She started off just wanting to rebel, so sucked up to the cool ‘freaks’ which at first seemed pathetic. But the character grew and became her own person, stronger, more political, outspoken and much cooler than the other ‘freaks’. So much better than a male character being like this, and so much better than a character who STARTED OFF feminist, here we witness a teen girl finding reasons to be left-wing, feminist and outspoken in a 1980s high school.
Brilliant scene from the BEST episode where her parents read her diary!!

Open Letter

Dear all boys who mosh at punk gigs,

Fuck off and let us enjoy the music.

Don’t tell me to ‘chill out’ after you bruised me, showered me in beer or worse.

Learn how to express yourselves without using violence.

Stop pretending moshing isn’t violent.

Whatever petty thing you are angry about ‘WAAH MY MUM MADE ME TIDY MY ROOM’ etc. write an emo song about it and get over it.

Stop trying to measure how punk you are by how loud you can shout, how hard you can hit and how much beer you can drink. This macho bullshit is getting predictable.

If you’re gonna sing along, don’t just learn the swear words. You give yourself away as a massively sexist fuckwit if every time you hear the words ‘fuck’, ‘cunt’, ‘bitch’ or ‘whore’ you cheer.

People, feel free to reblog, add more points to this open letter, sign with your name.

Thanks SO much

Jennifer Doveton,
